SL delegation presents report to UN Committee Against Torture

The fifty ninth session of the  United Nations Committee Against Torture is being held from November 7 to December 7.

The Sri Lankan delegation presented a report on torture at the committee meeting.

The Committee Against Torture (CAT) is the body of 10 independent experts that monitors implementation of the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment by its state parties.

The Sri Lankan Delegation was headed by Attorney General Jayantha Jayasuriya. Members included DIG Ajith Rohana representing the Legal Division of the Police, and Sisira Mendis, Chief of National Intelligence, Ministry of Defence, and several others.

The Committee has requested the Sri Lankan delegation to provide answers to several torture-related incidents in the country such as the alleged attacks against journalists Poddala Jayantha, Lasantha Wickrematunge and J.S. Tissainaygam, as well as against the lawyer J.C. Weliamuna.

The Sri Lankan delegation, in its 31 page answer has provided the progress of the above investigations.

Several members of the Committee raised questions from the Sri Lankan delegation.
